This cruise was supposed to be in the Gulf of Mexico, but unfortunately was changed so that the last 2 days were in the Atlantic and were very rough and uncomfortable. Also we had to change our return flight from Tampa to Miami, a much bigger and more difficult airport to negotiate when you have mobility problems. The entertainment on the cruise was fun and really good. All the staff coordinating the excursions including the bus drivers, Kim, were great. We boarded in New Orleans the afternoon prior to our day of departure, this included an excursion the next morning to the New Orleans WW2 Museum (Fantastic) Our room on board the ship was absolutely first class. We finished our cruise in Memphis, with a Graceland tour (the best) We will definitely be sailing with American Cruise Lines again, we cannot recommend them highly enough.
Comfortable walking shoes, a windbreaker, and light rainwear are also recommended items. Listen, you can have the best ships in the world, but if the staff and crew can’t make you feel at home and well taken care of, then forget it. The experience, the atmosphere, and the vibe that the crew created on this cruise were the best we’ve ever experienced on any cruise ship.

There is no formal night, although some men do wear sports coats at the Captain's Dinner, held once per cruise. So, this being a Chesapeake Bay cruise, the emphasis was on crab every which way, seafood, and fresh oysters. The bedding was plump, soft, and dreamy, almost impossible to emerge from in the dawn hour. But emerge I did to sit up and lift the shade to watch, transfixed, the daily sunrise over a calm or choppy Chesapeake Bay. My appreciation for this cocoon of a room increased over the week. The company prides itself on being completely American.
I would grade the staff above average in every respect. American Harmony doesn't cater to families with children specifically, and no special areas for kids or teenagers are available onboard. A handful of children might be seen on summer or holiday sailings but, by-and-large, this is a cruise experience geared towards mature adults. American Harmony has two comfortable lounges where lectures, presentations and onboard entertainment are delivered daily. We enjoyed our excursions, and will be taking another cruise in June, our 6th. Attire should include clothing for layering when the weather turns cool.
Only one complaint, having to wait sometimes for quite awhile for food in the dining room. With the services of an American crew, your needs will be satisfied in an attentive, if not overly polished, manner and without a language barrier. Families are more than welcome, but it is rare to see children on board.
